... The first piece we wanted
to record was RAWALPINDI BLUES, which featured Jack Bruce and trumpet player
Don Cherry, but it seemed impossible to get them both in New York at the
same time. By the time Jack could get away (he was working almost every
night in London with Tony Williams' band) Don had to leave for commitments
in Europe.

Als erstes wollten wir RAWALPINDI BLUES mit Jack Bruce und dem Trompeter
Don Cherry aufnehmen, doch schien es schier unmöglich zu sein, beide
gleichzeitig nach New York zu bekommen. Als Jack sich endlich aus London
loseisen konnte (er spielte dort fast jede Nacht mit Tony Williams' Band),
musste Don wegen seiner Engagements in Europa abreisen.

So we split the music into
two parts and recorded Don's parts first. This actually enhanced the piece
since it was intended to be a dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures.

Daher
teilten wir die Musik in zwei Stimmen auf und nahmen Dons Teil als ersten
auf. Tatsächlich kam das dem Stück sogar zugute, da es einen
Dialog zwischen den Kulturen des Morgen- und Abendlandes darstellen sollte.

The first session, featuring
Don Cherry and the "eastern band", took place on Nov. 30th, 1970. The players
were Calo Scott - cello, Leroy Jenkins - violin, Sam Brown - 12 string
guitar, Souren Baronian - G clarinet and dumbek, Ron McClure - bass, Carla
Bley - piano and organ, Paul Motian - drums, dumbek and bells.

Am
30. November 1970 fanden die ersten Aufnahmen mit Don Cherry und der "östlichen
Band" statt. Es spielten Calo Scott - Cello, Leroy Jenkins - Violine, Sam
Brown - zwölfsaitige Gitarre, Souren Baronian - G-Klarinette und Darabuka,
Ron McClure - Bass, Carla Bley - Klavier und Orgel, Paul Motian - Schlagzeug,
Darabuka und Schellen.

Don played ceramic flute
and percussion as well as trumpet. He also sang. It was a beautiful shock
to hear Don sing after all those years of knowing him only as a player.
The band's improvised sections were of the highest quality, rare and effortless.

Don
spielte sowohl Porzellanflöte als auch Perkussion und Trompete. Außerdem
sang er. Wir waren angenehm überrascht, Don singen zu hören,
nachdem wir ihn jahrelang nur als Instrumentalisten kannten. Die Improvisationen
der Band bewegten sich auf höchstem Niveau, waren ausgefallen und
voller Leichtigkeit.

Don left the country the
next day and on Dec. 7th Jack arrived and went right into the studio and
recorded for 2 days and nights almost straight through. Luckily John McLaughlin
was also in town so we were able to use him on electric guitar.

Am
nächsten Tag verließ Don das Land, und am 7. Dezember kam Jack
in New York an, ging direkt ins Studio und nahm zwei Tage und Nächte
fast durchgehend auf. Glücklicherweise hielt sich auch John McLaughlin
gerade in der Stadt auf, so dass wir ihn an der E-Gitarre einsetzen konnten.

With Jack on bass guitar,
Paul Motian on drums and myself on organ, we had the "western band". (Later,
when the opera was finished, they became the Desert Band and Jack's Traveling
Band.) Again, I was amazed at how great the playing was.

Außer
ihm gehörten Jack am Bass, Paul Motian am Schlagzeug und ich an der
Orgel zur "westlichen Band". (Als die Oper fertig war, wurde sie in "Desert
Band" umbenannt und Jacks Gruppe in "Traveling Band".) Wieder einmal war
ich erstaunt über das geniale Zusammenspiel.

We finished up RAWALPINDI
BLUES and also recorded BUSINESSMEN, DETECTIVE WRITER DAUGHTER, parts of
...AND IT'S AGAIN, and a few other bits and pieces. Jack and John went
back to London and I settled down to putting RAWALPINDI BLUES together.

Nachdem
RAWALPINDI BLUES fertig war, nahmen wir BUSINESSMEN, DETECTIVE WRITER DAUGHTER,
Teile von ...AND IT'S AGAIN und noch ein paar kleine Stücke auf. Jack
und John flogen wieder nach London, und ich setzte mich daran, RAWALPINDI
BLUES zusammenzufügen.
